Responsible digital at work, what solutions?

The number represents 3,5% of greenhouse gas emissions and this figure could double by 2025 with the sharp increase in our uses. Beyond the carbon footprint is the material footprint which is here to consider.

Indeed, ADEME published a report in January 2022 to alert and raise awareness of the environmental impact of digital technology and identify the right reflexes to reduce it. The analysis of the environmental impacts showed that 78% of the carbon footprint concerns the phase extraction/manufacturing. This phase consumes a lot of energy and abiotic resources: rare earths, water… Acting on this stage is therefore essential.

The use phase as for it represents 21% of the carbon footprint. These are the terminals and networks that need a lot of energy and water to operate.

Finally end of life stage is also problematic: if improperly recycled, electronic waste pollutes water and soil. In addition, the metals inside are numerous and difficult to recycle. Hence the importance of prioritizing the reuse and reconditioning.

Becoming aware of the importance of these impacts makes it possible to adopt new practices such as:

– Favor alternatives to new construction such as reconditioned equipment
- Sober and durable equipment with products that present environmental labels. The repairability index is also a good indicator: the higher the score, the easier the device will be to repair in the event of a breakdown.
- Increase lifespan of these digital devices by repairing or changing them only if necessary
- To give a second life to its devices or to recycle
– Adjust these uses: choose "green" hosts », designing eco-responsible sites, cleaning up these emails…
