THE NEW STRAWS: 1ST FRENCH MANUFACTURER OF SUGARCANE FIBER STRAW

Anti-waste law for a circular economy (AGEC) aims to "accelerate the change in the production and consumption model in order to limit waste et preserve resources resources, biodiversity and climate”. This law will allow promote the circular economy by getting out of disposable plastic, fighting against waste and acting against planned obsolescence.

The key objective of the Agec law is to achieve through successive measures the " 0 disposable plastic” by 2040. Since January 1, 2021, the sale and provision of certain plastic products has been gradually banned: this is the case for plastic straws.

The new Straws: the quality alternative to plastic straws

The new straws is a start-up created in 2020 which is positioned as the 1er French manufacturer of sugar cane fiber straws. The ambition of this company is to replace plastic straws with more ecological and responsible straws.

What are the advantages of these new straws?

– They are made from a totally renewable resource - bagasse - which is the name given to the residue of sugar cane once it is pressed and extracted from its juice
– They do not contain no toxic products, plastic*, PLA or PHA
- They are 100% biodegradable. The straws are certified OK Compost Home
- They are resistant at temperatures from -20° to +90° so do not melt in the glass
– They are also rusable : indeed, their composition allows them to resist water and heat, so they are easy to clean (in the dishwasher) to be reused many times. The straws have been tested according to standard NF EN 12875-1 during 30 wash cycles without any deterioration of their functionality.
– Little extra for the taste buds: they have a neutral taste, thus not altering the taste of the drinks.

How are they made?

The manufacture of these straws responds to a totally circular process, from the use of raw materials to the end of life.

They are made from sugar cane waste following these steps:

– Bagasse recovery: lhe waste from sugar cane or rum factories is recovered to give them a second life.
- Transformation into sustainable material: Bagasse, thanks to a natural biotransformation process, is revalued as a raw material serving as the basis for products. Bagasse represents ¾ of the mass, the rest being mineral and vegetable matter. The straws are therefore designed with 100% natural products, therefore 75% recycled materials.

They are biodegradable at the end of their life:

- Composting: straws certified OK Home Compost, disappear in a few weeks in the composter.

Most ? The New Straws were recently voted "Grand Prix du Jury Snacking d'Or 2022", which rewards the products of the year in the world of snacking.
