Mossy Earth is a social enterprise whose mission is to restore wild ecosystems, support wildlife and biodiversity, and help fight climate change. To achieve this, Mossy Earth creates independent and sustainable long-term funding mechanisms for rewilding, reforestation and conservation projects.
Membership in Mossy Earth Climate Action empowers businesses to mitigate their carbon footprint and actively restore ecosystems and wildlife in the most efficient, engaging and transparent way possible.
Plant the right trees in the right places
Tree planting organizations are known to have negative consequences on the environment by planting non-native species or practicing monoculture and planting on land where trees do not grow naturally. In some cases, organizations have dug effective carbon sinks, such as peat bogs, to plant trees and released CO2 into the atmosphere.
At the heart of every Mossy Earth reforestation project is a simple yet powerful goal: to restore native, wild forests. This means we only plant native trees where they would grow naturally, and look for projects that achieve one or more of these goals:
– restore ecosystem services
– preserve biodiversity
– fight the effects of climate change
Mossy Earth ensures that its impact goes beyond many tree planting initiatives by considering the larger ecological context. The long-term success of the projects is also ensured by the replanting of young trees that have not survived and by the planting of trees on land belonging to partners and subject to different states of protection.
A high environmental return on investment
Rewilding is considered one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways to combat climate change. Recent studies have shown that restoring just 15% of degraded land in critical areas could avert 60% of predicted species extinctions and capture 30% of the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution.
Mossy Earth's approach to rewilding is to achieve one or more of these goals that are central to rewilding.
– Restore key ecosystem processes
– Improve habitat integrity and connectivity
– Restore biodiversity and/or abundance of native species
– Reduce human influence on the landscape
They also favor rewilding projects that can demonstrate broader socio-economic and environmental benefits, such as:
– Provide greater economic value to local communities
– Prevent the spread of invasive species, flooding and land degradation
– An increase in carbon sequestration
How to Become a Mossy Earth Partner
By partnering with Mossy Earth through its Climate Action membership, you'll fund a diverse range of high-impact reforestation and rewilding projects each month that:
– Plant native trees to capture carbon and offset your environmental footprint.
– Restore habitats to support biodiversity.
– Support key ecosystems and species that are underfunded, threatened or play an important role in mitigating climate change.
– Boost your team's engagement and present your environmental credentials directly to your customers with monthly content that captivates and inspires.
– Receive regular project updates, 360° photos, GPS coordinates, project vlogs, biologist visits and drone flyovers.
Projects include vulture protection, radio tagging of Atlantic salmon, reforestation of the Scottish Highlands and restoration of kelp forests and wetlands.
